Gnome vs KDE April 2009

In last years it seams the Gnome have some "lack of vision" and is not impressioning the desktop Industry with anything in the last years. In the same time Kde is releasing version after version each of them with a lot of eye candy, performance, and translations.

Gnome has been choose d the default desktop management for Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian and soon they will release version 3.0 . It seems the new version 3.0 it will "revamping the user experience."

Just check this links for more informations for Gnome 3.0

TomTom Sues Microsoft

I think everybody remember about Microsoft suit over the FAT patent. TomTom (the GPS manufacturer ) was sued because they use FAT as filesystem for their external storages (SD cards etc). Now is time for payback ... TomTom sues Microsoft for infringement of four patents in Microsoft Streets and Trips. Until now the real question was: The Microsoft are targeting Linux through TomTom? I hope not, but probably TomTom and Microsoft will shake their hands together ... it's just business after all.

Is Microsoft Targeting Linux Through Tom Tom? Oh Please…

Patching the linux kernel without rebooting

Yes, is working. Just look here ... is named ksplice and you can find there all the sources and documentation.

Now you will never reboot a production server just for a kernel security patch. All can be done online.

You can not change the entire kernel without rebooting ! The changes need to don't introduce any semantic changes to the data structure, but for almost all security patches is enough.

Right now supports just x86-32, x86-64, and ARM architectures and have been tested on Linux kernel versions ranging from 2.6.8 to 2.6.28-rc6.

Dell triples Windows XP downgrade tax from 50$ to 150$

This days I'm very happy because I use Debian/Ubuntu Desktops at work and home. Is insane to get 150$ for a downgrade. This is happening for Dell Users:

http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/40501/140/

At Debian/Ubuntu it is free ... and I think no one will want to downgrade (as linux user). Anyway ... if you want it then you can get it for FREE not for 150$.

But is true ... a lot of Laptops vendors are selling their products only with Vista ... and no support for Linux, XP, Apple.

Another beer and I will sleep on the keyboard.

Will economic crash boost open source desktops?

Probably yes ... but not so much. Anyway it seems HP puts Linux on business PCs. What means that? Not much ... but it happen because of economic crash. So, probably, more people will interact with OpenSource software.

HP says that it is offering SLED 10 on the machine only in the United States, and estimates that the street price of a base PC will come to around $519.

Cheap price if is coming from HP ... :)

How to reset your linux password

The past has moved here

I see a lot of howto's what are based on the same "story": boot in "single mode" and type passwd to change the password, but are some systems like Debian and probably others what doesn't let you get in single mode if you don't know the root password ... so the single mode solution it will not work.

The past has moved here

Google Desktop for Linux

Google desktop was launched some time ago for Windows and now (after 3 years) they came with a Linux version. For those who doesn't know what it is :

You have lots of information on your computer, and you see a lot more on the web. With Google Desktop, whenever you look at a web page, read an email or edit a file, Desktop indexes that item and copies its contents into your local cache, so you can quickly and easily find all this stuff right when you need it.

You can read more here.
There is also a paid version (enterprise) for searching company networks.

Anyway we are glad to have a Linux version ...

You can get it from here.

Microsoft hunting OS Developers ?

Microsoft hunting OS Developers ?

Development veteran Tom Hanrahan, former director of engineering for the Open Source Development Labs and current director of engineering for the Linux Foundation, will be now playing the role of the new head of Microsoft’s interoperability lab, one of the offspring of its deal with Novell in November 2006.

Tom have a lot of experience in Open Source Development.

Anyway we wish a wonderful life for Tom :)

Surface versus XGL

OK ... something about this "Surface" from Microsoft ... I think all technology is already OLD ... why ? Because some other smart guys (is true without to much money) already invented that :)and of course is based on X server from linux and is developed by Novell and other hundread of peoples :)
